A New Brain

The Popular Mechanicals and CGTC, creators behind 2016 production of T he 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee at MTC’s Lawler Theatre, have announced a joint venture in producing another William Finn production, A New Brain, opening at the Performing Arts Centre at Camberwell Grammar School in January 2018.

There will be four consecutive shows on Friday 19th, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st January 2018. Tickets are now available at https://chook.as/cgtc/a-new-brain.

The fast paced, surreal and irreverent musical follows Gordon, a struggling songwriter who undergoes a life changing medical emergency. Through themes of love, loss and revelation, this story is about a man who learns to appreciate the life he has rather than the life he thinks he deserves.

Produced by The Popular Mechanicals and CGTC, the show features a professional cast from various elite performing arts institutions including WAAPA, NIDA and the VCA. Together the cast have worked on stage in green room award winning productions from the likes of Cameron Macintosh, Disney Theatricals and The Production Company to an impressive array of indie music theatre projects across Melbourne. Directed by Benjamin Giraud (Mary Poppins, WAAPA), the production presents a strong cast and an experienced creative team.

In a joint venture, Giraud’s start up production company T he Popular Mechanicals is working alongside CGTC, an alumni theatre group formed out of Camberwell Grammar School that passionately supports independent theatre in Melbourne. Camberwell Grammar School, a school well known for its outstanding arts programs, will be supporting the production by providing the cast and creative team with the school’s highly renowned performing arts facilities.

Director Benjamin Giraud said, “this production of A New Brain showcases some of Australia’s best talent. This exciting partnership with CGTC will allow us to produce a professional, stage-ready musical at extremely good value with tickets starting from only $35. We are thrilled to be offering this opportunity to Melbourne’s theatre goers at such great value.”

A New Brain opened on Broadway in 1998 and again in the 2015 most recent production with Encores! Off Center International Productions.
