We stopped into the dress rehearsal of Summer of The 17th Doll.

The day we premiered Ray Lawler’s groundbreaking play in 1955 marked the beginning of modern Australian drama. This story of shattered illusions has been revived many times since, but never with such imagination and heart as in Neil Armfield’s new production.

Having just been crowned Victorian of the year it seems simply too easy to say that Geoffrey Rush’s performance in this classic Oscar Wilde play helps to cement this distinction, but certainly his version of Lady Bracknell has created one of the most unique performances of a Victorian character we’ve seen on stage for some time.   

Catherine McClements (Rush, Tangle), Stephen Phillips (Winners & Losers), Grant Cartwright and Greg Stone will join a stellar troupe of actors to read three new plays by award-winning Melbourne playwrights Paul Galloway, Melissa Reeves, and Robert Reid at The Cybec Readings on 22, 23 and 24 November 2011 at 7pm at the MTC Theatre, Lawler Studio.
